The Ring Finger

The finger is a part of our hands and our hands are a component of our body. Usually, there are five fingers on a hand. If we were to name them, it would be Thumb, Index finger, Middle finger, Ring finger, and Pinky. Today, we will explore the Ring finger and why it is so special.

The name of the Ring finger dates back to the 2nd century. Egyptians believed that the fourth finger has a vein, known as the lover’s vein, that was related to the heart. By wearing a ring around our lover’s vein was supposed to secure the husband’s love for the wife. Unfortunately, this is not true. Now try and do the following 1. Hold a fist downwards so that your fingers are facing the floor. 2. Now, try and hold your index finger close to 180 degrees. 3. Now try it for the middle finger and the ring finger. 4. Also try it with two fingers, pinky and ring finger, the middle finger. 5. Lastly, try and hold your ring finger up higher than the middle finger without any other fingers up. 6. Now vice versa. You might have noticed that when your middle finger is up, you should’ve felt a tight strain in your knuckles. In addition, you will find that you won’t be able to hold your ring finger up even 90 degrees. Why is it? There are a lot of muscles that move your fingers. The muscle that is used to bend thumbs is called Flexor Pollicis Brevis muscle and the Flexor Pollicis Longus muscle. For the rest of the four fingers, there is a flexor digitorum superficialis muscle and a flexor digitorum profundus muscle. These muscles are controlled by the median nerve and the Profundus muscles, which take care of the pinky and ring finger, are controlled by the ulnar nerve. Next, we have to know about the muscles that move the fingers. The muscles that move towards the four fingers are known as the Extensor Digitorum muscle. This is the big muscle. For the Index finger and the pinky finger, there are small muscles called the Extensor digit muscles and the Extensor Indicis muscle. Here is the key point. There are separate muscles for the index finger and the pinky finger which allow it to move freely from the other fingers. It acts independently. However, the ring finger and the middle fingers do not have their muscles. As a result, we have to measure the average that each of the muscles in the fingers gets. If you unbend the ring finger first then unbend the middle finger, you will notice that the ring finger will stick higher than the middle finger and vice versa. Lastly, the theory that your personality depends on the length of your fingers is not entirely false. The more you are exposed to the male hormone when you are a baby, you are likely to have the ring finger longer than your index finger. Anyways, take it with a grain of salt.
